City Hall News: Week of April 17, 2023

Meeting this week are council’s Municipal Properties Committee, the Elkins Sanitary Board, and the Elkins Common Council. Council will “lay the levy” on Tuesday. On Thursday, a proposed plan for the downtown streetscape will be presented.

The Sanitary Board meets Monday at 10 a.m. Agenda items include review of invoices and discussion of Town of Harman utilities.

Council meets in special session Tuesday at 7 p.m. to “lay the levy.” All West Virginia cities and counties meet on the third Tuesday in April to take this final step in the annual budget process. The city’s budget has already been adopted and approved by the state auditor. At this meeting, council will be setting the property tax rate for the coming fiscal year, which is to remain unchanged from past years.

Meeting Wednesday at 9 a.m., the Municipal Properties Committee will discuss council chamber sound issues, a proposal for the West Virginia Division of Highways to take over a section of Riverbend Road, and a request to sell a Sanitation Department truck to the Sanitary Board.

On Thursday at 6 p.m., GAI Consultants will present the streetscape plan it has devised based on public and stakeholder input sessions held last fall. This will be an open forum including a question-and-answer period.

Council meets Thursday at 7 p.m. The agenda may be adjusted through Tuesday. Current items include the second and final reading of the sewer-rate increase and an agreement with Avertium for an IT assessment. (More on the rate increase: https://bit.ly/Elkins-Sewer-2023)

All meetings are open to the public and, unless otherwise stated, held at Elkins City Call (401 Davis Avenue). Find agendas and other meeting information here: www.cityofelkinswv.com/council-and-committee-meetings.
