The Mayor of Elkins presides over council meetings but has no vote except in the event of a tie. Other duties include representing the city with outside organizations, attending ceremonial events, serving on various boards and commissions, and issuing proclamations.

Proclamations
The mayor signs many proclamations throughout the year, typically for non-profit or similar organizations serving the public interest. In order to make arrangements for a proclamation signing, contact the mayor’s office in writing, via facsimile, email, or U.S. mail. To ensure efficient processing of requests, the city asks that requests be made at least 10 business days in advance of the date the document is needed.

Requests should include:

• Contact person’s first and last name, address, and telephone number.
• A brief summary and/or background of the event or organization.
• The name and date (s) of the day, week, month or event to be proclaimed.
• Draft text for the proclamation, including 4-6 “whereas” clauses.
• An indication of whether the proclamation should be mailed or will be picked up and the date.
• A date when the proclamation is needed.

Meeting or Ceremony Requests
If you would like to invite the mayor to an event or request a meeting with the mayor, please contact the mayor’s office. The mayor’s executive secretary has access to the mayor’s calendar but cannot finalize appointments before consulting the mayor. Please keep in mind that the mayor attends many meetings each week, both during and after business hours, so it can sometimes be difficult to schedule a new meeting on short notice.
