Pursuant to Chapter 6, Article 9 of West Virginia Code, the financial statements of all local units of government must be audited each year by either the West Virginia State Auditor or a private accounting firm approved by the state auditor. The time period for each audit is what is known as a “fiscal year.” All governments in West Virginia use a fiscal year that runs from July 1 to June 30; the fiscal year is named for the year in which it ends. For example, Fiscal Year 2018 ran from July 1, 2017 until June 30, 2018. Audits of a given fiscal year are typically completed by spring of the following year, i.e., 2019 for Fiscal Year 2018.
