Administration

The city council exercises authority over the city government. Among some roles they have are to determine city laws, rules, and regulation, city budgets, tax levies, and the appointment of city administrative officers.

The Mayor of Elkins appears on the ballot in all five city wards and are elected to two-year terms. Elkins mayors chair city council meetings and has voting rights in the case of a tied council vote. The mayor is the chair of the Elkins Sanitary Board, as well as a member of the Elkins Planning Commission.

Auditors evaluate the accuracy of financial records, the effectiveness of systems protecting against fraud and theft, the nature of accounting methods and processes in use at the city, and other aspects of compliance with state law and government accounting standards.
