How to Propose a New City Law - Or Change a Current Law
Elkins residents may propose new city laws or changes to existing city laws by submitting a City Code Amendment Request Form.
To begin, please complete and submit a City Code Amendment Request Form to the Office of the City Clerk. The Clerk’s office will review your submission and forward it to the Rules and Ordinances Committee for placement on an upcoming committee agenda.
Your request should include the following:
- The section(s) of city code you wish to amend, or a description of your proposed new law;
- A clear explanation of the proposed change or new law;
- Your reasons for suggesting the change, including any problems it would solve or benefits it would provide;
- Any other supporting information you wish the committee to consider.

Important Note
This form is not used for applications to amend the zoning code. Anyone interested in proposing changes to the zoning code should contact the Office of the City Clerk for information on the proper process.
