City Hall News: Week of August 31, 2025

Elkins, WV, August 30, 2025: The City of Elkins reminds residents that starting on September 2, 2025, they will see a change in curbside trash collection rules as the City implements its first-ever garbage bag limit.

Approved by City Council on Thursday, June 25, Ordinance 345 amends Chapter 50 of the Elkins City Code, setting the following bag limits for weekly curbside pickup:

  • Twelve (12) 13-gallon kitchen bags, or
  • Six (6) 30-gallon large trash bags, or
  • Three (3) 55-gallon contractor bags.

Labor Day is this Monday, September 1. City Hall’s offices will be closed that day.

The City’s Sanitation Department will also be closed on Labor Day. Monday’s regularly scheduled trash pickup will occur the following morning, Tuesday, Sep. 2.

The City’s Sanitation Department announces that for September 2025, the free monthly bulk item pickup (one large item, such as an appliance, TV, or mattress) schedule is as follows:

  • Monday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, Sep. 3
    • *Monday’s bulk pickup for September will be two days later because of Labor Day.
  • Tuesday weekly trash pickup: Tuesday, Sep. 9
  • Wednesday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, Sep. 17
  • Thursday weekly trash pickup: Thursday, Sep 25
  • Friday weekly trash pickup: Friday, Sep. 26

This free service is for ONE ITEM only, such as an appliance, TV, mattress, or piece of furniture.

To schedule and pay for a Special Trash Pickup, such as a truck bed- or dumpster-sized load at any time, please call 304.636.1414, ext. 1437.

The Yard Waste bin at 1 Baxter Street is temporarily closed through next week. It will reopen for use after 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5. The Operations Department thanks you in advance for your understanding.

CITY HALL BUSINESS

The following committee meetings will meet on Tuesday, September 2:

  • Joint Personnel & Finance Committee, 1:00 p.m.: Items of business include a proposed classification and compensation plan for the City’s employees, and the reappointment of the City Treasurer.
  • Public Safety, 2:30 p.m.: The agenda includes new member orientation to public safety topics.
  • Rules and Ordinances, 3:30 p.m.: This committee will discuss a request from Fairness WV to update the City’s non-discrimination ordinance; it will also discuss proposed amendments to the city council’s rules of parliamentary procedure.

The next Elkins City Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 4, at 7:00 p.m. The agenda is here, current as of Friday afternoon, Aug. 29.

All of the above meetings will be held at the Phil Gainer Community Center, 142 Robert E. Lee Avenue Extension, in Elkins.

City Hall is still closed to the public for renovation and repairs until further notice. All departments are in operation and available for service as usual, but in-person appointments will require advance arrangements. All City meetings occur at the Phil Gainer Community Center (142 Robert E. Lee Ave. Extension) in Elkins unless otherwise noted.

The Finance Department mailed utility & in-city fire fee bills on August 29; they are due on September 18. Utility shutoffs are scheduled for September 3 for unpaid water bills that were due on August 20.
