Elkins, WV, September 7, 2025: The City of Elkins reminds its residents to sign up for emergency alerts. Residents with mobile phones can receive important alerts including weather warnings and water outages. They will also receive reminders about changes to city services due to holidays. Sanitation Department Updates
The City’s Sanitation Department announces that for September 2025, the free monthly bulk item pickup (one large item, such as an appliance, TV, or mattress) schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday weekly trash pickup: Tuesday, Sep. 9
- Wednesday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, Sep. 17
- Thursday weekly trash pickup: Thursday, Sep 25
- Friday weekly trash pickup: Friday, Sep. 26
This free service is for one item only, such as an appliance, TV, mattress, or piece of furniture.
To schedule and pay for a Special Trash Pickup, such as a truck bed- or dumpster-sized load, please call 304.636.1414, ext. 1437.

City Hall Business
This coming week, the following committees are scheduled to meet:
Monday, September 8 at the Phil Gainer Community Center:
- Municipal Properties – Members will discuss the Davis Avenue Bridge closure issue (slated for fall 2026) and Second Street parking rentals as well as parking for those with disabilities.
- Finance Committee – 1:00 p.m. Items for discussion include extending a right-of-way on Ellis Ave.; contributing to the Babe Ruth League for projects at Bluegrass Park; and requests from Elkins Area Shared Trails concerning grants and a feasibility study for a bike and pedestrian lane on Beverly Pike.
- Water Board – 4:00 p.m. Agenda not yet posted as of press time.
Tuesday, September 9: The Historic Landmarks Commission is scheduled to meet at 5:00 p.m. at the Darden House, 206 Davis Avenue, Elkins. The agenda is not available as of press time.
Thursday, September 11:
- Firefighters Pension Board – 216 4th Street, 10:30 a.m. Items of business include a fund status report and the reappointment of the fund’s investment manager to another one-year term.
- The Planning Commission meets at the WV Wood Tech Center, 10 11th Street, 3:30 p.m. Agenda not yet posted as of press time.
The next City Council meeting is scheduled on September 18, 7:00 p.m., at the Phil Gainer Community Center.
Meetings are generally held at the Phil Gainer Community Center, 142 Robert E. Lee Avenue Extension, in Elkins, unless noted otherwise.
