Elkins Tree Board Hosting Gratitude Reception Sunday, June 8, 1:00 p.m.
The Elkins Tree Board, an advisory committee that focuses on trees within Elkins, is hosting a gratitude reception on Sunday, June 8, from 1-3 p.m. The reception will be at Big Timber Brewing Co. on 2 Davis Avenue in Elkins, followed by the opportunity to take a self-guided walking tour of a Downtown Elkins tree trail. Members of the public are welcome to attend to find out more about the Elkins Tree Board and Friends of Trees. A map of the Downtown Elkins Tree Walk map is available for download here.
“We’re excited to celebrate our community and how they’ve been supportive of our local urban forest initiatives,” said Marilynn Cuonzo, chair of the Tree Board. “From our public education programs in city parks and the Kump Education Center, to our annual Adopt-A-Tree program, the work of this board and Elkins’ residents have paid off.”
Among the efforts Cuonzo mentioned, the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Elkins as a Tree City USA and has participated in tree planting events in Elkins and across North Central West Virginia.
Long-term goals of the Tree Board, which the City of Elkins established by ordinance in 2008, include having more tree-lined streets in all of Elkins’ five wards as part of its Elkins Urban Forest Management plan. Since its inception the Tree Board, in tandem with local volunteers, has planted several hundred trees to expand they City’s canopy across its parks and neighborhoods.
More information about the Elkins Tree Board can be found on the City of Elkins website and the Elkins Friends of Trees Facebook Page.
