Save the Date: Elkins Volunteer Fire Department Fireman’s Parade, Oct. 3

Elkins, WV, September 22, 2025: The Elkins Fire Department (EFD) will host its annual Fireman’s Parade Friday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Elkins. This event is fun for all ages, but most suited for children. This parade honors local fire departments in West Virginia and offers local firefighters the opportunity to go into the community and show off their engines and equipment.

Volunteer fire departments are a huge part of local communities not only in West Virginia, but in all over the country. They are important as these firefighters provide essential emergency services to communities that might not otherwise be able to afford full-time, paid fire crews. They ensure that residents in rural and small-town areas have access to quick, life-saving responses during fires, accidents, and natural disasters.

Beyond firefighting, volunteers often assist with medical emergencies, search and rescue operations, and community safety education. These departments also build strong community bonds, as residents often feel inspired to step up to protect their neighbors. Without volunteer fire departments, many communities would face slower response times, higher risks, and more damage during emergencies.

This event will be great for kids as learning about firefighters helps build trust. Kids can meet firefighters at events like this parade. There, they learn about fire safety and see that firefighters are there to protect them. Such experiences make kids feel more comfortable and less scared in emergencies. By learning about what firefighters do, children gain respect for them and trust that they will be there to help when needed. To that end, the Fireman’s Parade will bring these community bonds full circle as kids and their families can watch West Virginia’s fire departments show the power of their emergency services.

This evening parade features fire trucks, emergency vehicles, and first responders from throughout the region, all rolling through downtown in a vivid display of community spirit. The roar of engines and flicker of flashing lights echo through the crisp mountain air, drawing crowds of all ages. It not only honors the bravery and dedication of firefighters but also reminds everyone of how essential public safety services are in this rugged and beautiful part of the state.

About the Author: Kyle Thomas is a sophomore and is studying Environmental Science at Davis & Elkins College. He is also on D&E’s baseball team. Kyle is originally from Bahama, North Carolina. His goal in life is to become a State Fish and Wildlife Officer and continue serving as a volunteer firefighter in the fire service.
