The Wastewater Collection Department is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system of Elkins, in compliance with extensive regulations imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The department’s duties include cleaning and clearing the more than 35 miles of city owned sewer pipes (including sewer mains, force main lines, and thousands of service laterals to property lines), assisting property owners and their plumbers when they have problems, and responding to sewer-line breaks. The department is also responsible for maintaining lift stations throughout the city, which include emergency generators, spare pumps, and control equipment.
