Elkins Tree Board Invites Public Input for Urban Forest Vision
Elkins W. Va., November 2, 2023: The Elkins Tree Board (ETB) is soliciting community input to inform its Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) 2024. The purpose of this plan is to guide future actions related to the planting, maintenance, and sustainability of trees in Elkins.
Since its establishment in 2008, the ETB has pursued multiple tree-planting and educational initiatives. A study spearheaded in 2017 by Dr. Gregory Dahle highlighted the substantial ecological contributions of Elkins’ urban trees, including the capture of 82,104 tons of carbon annually. However, with canopy coverage at just over 30%, the study advocates for Elkins to aim for an optimal 40% canopy coverage. The UFMP would set forth objectives like effective administration, site analysis, proper tree planting and maintenance, community education, and more to realize this goal.
Community members are invited to voice their insights, priorities, and suggestions by taking the survey. This is an opportunity to influence decisions that will shape the city’s treescapes for generations to come.
