Proclamation Declares May 2, 2024, as National Day of Prayer

Elkins W. Va., April 17, 2024: Mayor Jerry Marco has officially proclaimed May 2, 2024, as National Day of Prayer in the city of Elkins, West Virginia. This declaration honors a tradition deeply embedded in the history of America.

The proclamation states that throughout American history, faith in Almighty God has played a pivotal role in shaping the foundation and growth of our great nation. From the earliest pilgrims to the halls of the Continental Congress, from the leadership of Presidents to Governors, the praise and gratitude bestowed upon the Lord have resonated through generations. The observance of the National Day of Prayer, slated for Thursday, May 2, 2024, carries the theme “Lift Up the Word, Light Up the World,” drawing inspiration from the verses in 2 Samuel 22:29-31.

Since its inception, the National Day of Prayer has been an integral part of our national heritage. Declared by the First Continental Congress in 1775 and put into law by the United States Congress in 1952, this sacred day underscores the importance of prayer in our collective journey as a nation. With subsequent amendments affirming its significance, including Public Law 100-307 signed by President Reagan in 1988, the National Day of Prayer stands as a testament to our commitment to seek guidance and renewal.

Mayor Jerry Marco emphasizes the importance of taking time on May 2, 2024, to pray for our fellow citizens.

“Through prayer,” Marco stated, “may we find strength, guidance, and unity, as we navigate the challenges and triumphs that we face every day in this great nation.”
