City Hall News: Week of August 15, 2022

Meeting this week are council’s Municipal Properties Committee, ad hoc Organization Audit Committee, and ad hoc Special Hiring Committee. Also meeting are the Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission and the Elkins Parks and Recreation Commission. Council meets Thursday.

The Organization Audit Committee meets Tuesday at 1 p.m. This committee was formed to study opportunities for further improving the city’s organizational structure. At Tuesday’s meeting, the committee will work on the job descriptions for operations assistant and operations administrative assistant.

The Special Hiring Committee meets Tuesday at 2 p.m. to plan interviews of applicants for the vacant operations manager position.

At its 4 p.m. Tuesday meeting in the Darden House (next door to city hall), the Historic Landmarks Commission will continue work on utility bills, historic plaques, and a presentation about stained glass windows for the Municipal Properties Committee.

On Tuesday, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Wastewater Collection Department will be working on underground lines on Randolph Avenue near Sycamore Street. Watch for flaggers.

On Wednesday at 9 a.m., the Municipal Properties Committee will hold a hearing in response to a petition for the city to abandon the section of Gorman Avenue between Reed Street and Martin Street. The committee will meet immediately following to take up this petition and to discuss Sycamore Street parking, a request for transfer of real estate from the Randolph County Development Authority, the city sanitation garage, and stained-glass windows at Darden House.

The Parks and Recreation Commission meets Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Center. Agenda items include the Glendale/Riverbend trail, Canada Goose control, and an application to serve alcohol at a Phil Gainer Community Center event.

Council meets Thursday at 7 p.m. The agenda is not yet posted and may be adjusted through Tuesday. One business item will be the second and final reading of an ordinance updating the city’s zoning laws for the first time since the 1970s. (More: https://cityofelkinswv.com/zoning-update/.)

The Kump House is hosting a Tree Nursery Workday on Saturday, August 20, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
