Street Department Trimming Branches Along City Alleyways
The Elkins Street Department will be trimming brush and branches overhanging city alleys starting Monday, August 28. Property owners preferring to do this work themselves are encouraged to do so prior to August 28. The work will proceed throughout city wards in order, starting with First Ward.
“The city has the responsibility to keep all roads and alleys free of obstructions,” says Mike Kesecker, the city’s operations manager. “Branches sticking out into the right of way can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians and can cause damage to passing vehicles. The trees and bushes themselves can be damaged when their branches stick out where they might be ripped off by vehicles.”
The city’s authority to trim back branches over roads and alleys is stipulated in Elkins City Code ยง 93.007, which states that “no person shall in any way obstruct any street,” with obstructions defined as including “branches… overhanging [roads and alleys] so as to interfere with travel thereon and use thereof.”
“We understand that people might prefer to do their own trimming,” says Kesecker. “That’s why we’re giving notice and leaving folks a weekend when they can get this done before our crews start moving through.”
Although work will begin with First Ward on Monday and proceed in order through the other wards, it is not possible to estimate how long each ward will take. Property owners wishing to do their own trimming should plan on doing so no later than the weekend of August 26-27.
