Athletic Spirit Meets Community Service: D&E Students at Elkins City Hall

Elkins W. Va., November 7, 2023: Elkins City Hall welcomed athletic students from Davis & Elkins College on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

In a remarkable demonstration of community spirit and engagement, over 200 students from Davis & Elkins College’s athletics department visited Elkins City Hall as part of a community service initiative. The gathering was a vivid example of the strong ties between the college and the city of Elkins.

Patrick Snively, the Director of Athletics, expressed his gratitude to the students for their significant turnout.

Mayor Jerry Marco, an alumnus of Davis & Elkins College, class of 1990, continued the warm reception with a heartfelt speech. “The presence of our students increases Elkins’ population by 10%—a figure that reflects the integral role you play in our community,” Mayor Marco noted. “It’s imperative to us that you feel Elkins is not just a place you study, but a place you can call home.”

Elkins Operation Manager, Mike Kesecker, addressed the practicalities of the day, directing students to supplies provided for the city cleanup. He then thanked them for their service and dedication to helping the community at large.

“I commend the athletics department for fostering a sense of civic responsibility among our students,” said Kesecker. “Your willingness to participate and contribute to the city’s welfare is invaluable.”

The students then took to the streets, engaging in various activities to beautify the city, such as weeding and trash collection.

Councilwoman Nanci Bross-Fregonara, Operations Assistant Melody Himes, Operations Administrative Assistant Shanna Poe, and Communication Specialist Jeremy Deighan were also present to support the initiative.

“Davis & Elkins College is a cornerstone of Elkins, not just in education but as a beacon of positive impact and community engagement,” stated Mayor Marco. “We want each student to know that they are a valued member of our city family. Let this day serve as a reminder that here in Elkins, you are home.”
