Community Action 60th Anniversary and Community Action Month Proclamation

Elkins W. Va., May 8, 2024: The City of Elkins proudly commemorates the 60th Anniversary of Community Action, recognizing its impact on communities nationwide. In a proclamation issued by Mayor Jerry A. Marco, May 2024 is declared as Community Action Month, honoring the dedication and achievements of West Virginia’s Community Action Agencies.

For six decades, Community Action has been a beacon of hope, giving opportunities for millions of Americans to pursue the American Dream while building up the people of this society. From connecting individuals to life-changing services to creating pathways to prosperity, Community Action agencies have been pivotal in building strong, resilient communities across 99% of all American counties.

Representing the spirit of Community Action, Hannah Myers, Parent Partner at WV Birth to Three, emphasized the significance of these agencies in rural communities, saying, “Community Action is really important, especially to our rural communities. There’s a lot of different branches, supports, and services, and we’re all out here just trying to change people and make their lives better, one family at a time.”

Throughout the month of May, Elkins encourages citizens to join in recognizing and supporting the contributions of Community Action agencies. These organizations, such as North Central West Virginia Community Action and MountainHeart Community Services, Inc., continue to empower individuals, families, and communities to overcome challenges and achieve their highest potential.

“I think especially in small towns, where there’s not as many corporate services and resources for the needed circumstances and situations,” stated Myers, “that agencies like MountainHeart and West Virginia Birth to Three is where we come in to fill those gaps and make those changes.”
