Civil Service Exam Preparation

Thank you for your interest in joining the Elkins Fire Department. The following information will help you study for the Civil Service Exam, which is required to be considered for the firefighter position with the city.

Studying for the Exam

It is highly recommended that you study for the written exam that you will be required to take as part of this process. Although the exams do not require past firefighting experience or formal training to pass, studying will help prepare you for the types of questions that may be asked and also for the specific requirements of this test, which might be different from other standardized tests you may have taken in the past.

You may purchase a study guide from the testing company for $15 (PDF download) at this link: https://www.fpsi.com/product/new-fact-vb/

Most public and college libraries, including the Elkins-Randolph County Public Library, hold copies of firefighter test preparation books; please note that they are not necessarily published by the same company that produces the test you will be taking, but they will still cover similar subject matter.

Another option is to search online for “firefighter test preparation,” or something similar. There are multiple websites providing free information that may help you anticipate and practice the kinds of questions that are typically asked on a firefighter test.
