Elkins City Hall News: Week of January 8, 2024

Elkins W. Va., January 5, 2024: The Public Safety Committee, the Municipal Properties Committee, the Water Board, the Tree Board, and the Planning Commission meet the week of January 8. There will also be a joint Finance/Personnel Committee meeting on Monday, January 8.

The Public Safety Committee meets Monday at 9:00 a.m. to hear reports from public safety officials.

The Municipal Properties Committee meets Monday at 11:00 a.m. Items on the agenda include: petition of Coca Cola Consolidated, Inc. (CCCI) to abandon an opened portion of an alley known as Coke Lane; discussion of the Rosie the Riveter statue; update on open bids and contracts; and discussion of city-owned real property.

The Finance Committee and Personnel Committee have a joint meeting Monday at 1:00 p.m. Items on the agenda include: proposal for fiscal year 2025 PEIA employee benefits; planning of the fiscal year 2025 budget process; and budget revisions.

The Water Board meets Monday at 4:00 p.m. Items on the agenda include: PSC order concerning the Whitmer water system; the appointment of a Vice Chair in the absence of the Chair (appointment to be made at the January 2024 meeting); update on City of Elkins’ water and sewer line replacement; discussion of the Leadville agreement; Water Board invoices; and future planning for the City of Elkins’ water system.

The Tree Board meets Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Items on the agenda include: DOF Urban Forestry Grant 2024 (due Spring 2024); discussion of appropriate tree selection with arborist David Mitchell; final draft review for the Urban Forest Management Plan; funding request for fiscal year 2025 (due February 9, 2024); outreach dates; annual report review; group photo; and discussion of a board vacancy.

The Planning Commission meets Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The agenda may be adjusted through Tuesday. Items on the agenda include: continue working on zoning an unzoned parcel near N 12^th Street; consider changes to the city’s sign rules; and propose new use definitions.

In-city fire fees and utility bills were mailed out on December 29 and are due January 17. Past due utility bills that remain unpaid will have service disconnected on Monday January 8.

Fourth Quarter B&Os and 2023 Annual B&Os were mailed out on December 29 and are due January 31.

There have been changes to the city’s Christmas tree disposal program for January 2024. Members of the public are encouraged to bring their own trees to a drop-off site at the Street Department Garage (1 Baxter Street), to enable Street Department employees to focus on higher-value work such as stormwater management. For those who cannot transport their own trees, limited curbside pickup will be available through January 12. Trees may not be picked up on the same day they are placed curbside. Please ensure trees are free of ornaments, decorations, lights, tinsel, and similar items.
